THE FIRST WELL-KNOWN INFLUENCER EMERGED 265 YEARS AGO
Perhaps the Royal Family of the United Kingdom officially enabled influencing as long ago as 1476!
When William Caxton became the King’s printer in 1476, he was one of the earliest recipients of a Royal Warrant. A Royal Warrant signalled that the holder supplied goods for use in the royal household. In turn, this of course meant that the general public gained confidence in the quality of services from that supplier.
It soon became much more relatable to today’s brands when, in 1995, the well-known pottery range Wedgwood was granted the Royal Warrant from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Who would have imagined that when Josiah Wedgwood, aged 29, founded his independent pottery in 1759, he would have been labelled as one of the earliest influencers of all time, some 265 years later. Although, perhaps more subtly compared to today’s influencers!
Today’s influencer market, is far less understated as it forges ahead with the fast-paced platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube where we will see not only high-profile celebrities but public figures from these platforms, helping to meet a company’s marketing target with their performance as a brand ad influencer; a perfume worn by a major public figure such as Kendall Jenner, Selena Gomez or Loren Gray WILL sell thousands or even millions more bottles of THAT perfume. So, it is no wonder that the phenomenon of the influencer market has become the most important and effective ways to reach a target audience. But, watch out influencers, as AI is here and is about to intrude on your fame.
End.
